Unschooling Portraits: Carolyn

Please introduce yourself.

My name is Dr. Carolyn McKeon. I have 4 boys, ages 16, 13, 12, and 10. I have always homeschooled (so 16 years), but only in the last 7 have I been an unschooler. I have a PhD in education and that is where I really found my unschooling voice. The journey has been amazing and I am blessed to be on it. Continue Reading

Unschooling in Action

Our “Unschooling in Action” series highlights photographs of real, live unschoolers doing real, live unschooling. If you’d like to see your unschooling photo here, please post it on our Facebook wall!

Unschooling at our home. Our three playing the Game of Life outside with two of our neighbors, also a fulltime RVing family. It did come to blows (between our two boys!) so a good time to learn that life is indeed hard and unfair at times, but doesn’t need to end in a fight.

Unschooling Portraits: Robyn

Please introduce yourself.

I am Robyn Parker and I have two sons, ages 17 and 14. I am 45 and I actually was an elementary school teacher from 1989 to 1999. I live in East Tennessee; close to the Smoky Mountains National Park.

I have been at home since October 1999. My oldest went to school grades K-2 and my youngest went to a day school Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon when he was 4. Other than that he has never attended school.

What does your typical day look like?

Unschooling Portraits: Missy

Please introduce yourself.

Hi! We’re the Bell Family. We are a family of four: Michael, Missy, Jonah, and Maeryn.

Michael is a QA guy for the Department of Defense, layout editor at ArtsVine (our family business), and a songwriter and musician (Michael Bell’s music). Jonah is an eight-year-old Minecraft lover who also engages often with Legos, dragons, unicorns, ballet, drumming, archery, and more. Maeryn is a four-year-old artist in all kinds of media. Her work is often posted at What Maeryn Sees. She also enjoys dance, horses, faeries, movies, and the Laurie Berkner Band.

I’m Missy. I’m the creative and content editor at ArtsVine. I blog at Redefined Juliet, cook interesting vegetarian dishes, make art, act, direct, and run a few miles on occasion. Continue Reading

What, You Learn on Saturdays?

When I got to kind of introduce myself to the Christian Unschooling community through the Unschooling Portraits series, I described myself like this:

I’m Joan Otto, wife to Chris and mom to Sarah (who’s 12). We live in central Pennsylvania in a house that also includes my mom, a large dog, 5 cats, and a hamster. We’re new to homeschooling of any sort, sort of – I was homeschooled for several years, but our daughter had been in public school until Leap Day – Feb. 29 of this year. We blog about our life at Our School at Home. (Which was a funny choice for a title, really, given that we aren’t “school at home” types at all.)
