What We’re Reading: The Bussingers

what we are reading march

Just this week I broke down and decided to take the kids to the library on our new Army post to register for an account. I’m glad I did now because they have some awesome books and resources!

Raven had just finished the second Wereworld book and was looking for something similar to read. She found an older book called Werewolf Rising that she seems to be enjoying.

Denna found a Dragonbreath she hadn’t read yet, as well as The Flying Beaver Brothers and The Evil Penguin Plan. She also helped me pick out some books about Korean language and culture:

  • Teach Me Korean (with a song cd)
  • Land of Morning Calm
  • All About Korea

Gaius had fun looking at the board books, but the book he picked to take home had lots of pictures in it that he liked. I didn’t pay much attention when we checked it out.

big questions

Yesterday though, Denna picked it up and started reading it out loud while I was doing some cooking. The book is called Big Questions by DK Publishing – and it is awesome!

I have always been a lover of philosophy, and I have been looking for a book that would explain the discipline in a fun way for kids. Well, this book lists tons of the “big” questions in life and goes over some of the major philosophies and what their answers for each question are. It’s like a huge philosophical primer for kids!

Denna and I had a great discussion about the existence of God, free will, and souls.

As for me, I have been idly reading through a book I got on my tablet called Intuitive Unschooling.

I also recently finished the first book of Fablehaven by Brandon Mull. I have to admit, I thought his newer series Beyonders was better. I’ve read the first two of those books and they are much faster paced and the characters are better developed. Fablehaven didn’t really have strong lead characters. I found them predictive and kind of dull. The pace was also very slow at the beginning, and then ended sooner than I expected.  I think I’ll go back to reading his newer books.

What We’re Reading: The Bussingers

I’m late posting this.  But I know that if I wait I won’t get another link-up posted until March because we will be packing up and moving overseas this coming month!

Update on our reads – we finished The Hobbit on our road trip, Raven finished IceFire and has read 2 more books from the series, and I am on the 4th Harry Dresden book.

Here is what we have been reading since last time.

January Reads

Raven:

  • The Most Explosive Science Book in the Universe! – we found an awesome Minecraft t-shirt that sparked an interest in the periodic table.
  • Knitting for Kids – technically not “reading” but Raven found this book in our storage unit and decided to pick up the needles again.
  • The Fire Within – she is still plowing through the dragon books.

Denna:

  • Various books about South Korea – her interest about our new home country has been growing since we finally received our orders and paperwork to leave.
  • Twenty-Odd Ducks – we found a whole set of fun books that explain why different parts of language is important (end punctuation, apostrophes, commas, etc.)

What We’re Reading Together:

  • The Magician’s Nephew – listening to this one in the car.
  • Howl’s Moving Castle – After buying the movie, I found the book by chance in the thrift store! We plan to make this our book for the trip to Korea.

What I’m Reading Alone:

Books:

  • Fresh Faith – because we all need a little refreshing in our walk with the Lord sometimes.
  • Quotable Quotes – I have no idea why I picked up this book at the library book sale, but it has some great quotes about education and family.

What We’re Reading – The Bussingers

Best Christmas Pageant Ever

With only 4 days until Christmas and a long car trip coming up, I decided to wait on reading our favorite Christmas book until we are safe and warm at Grandma’s house.

We have read The Best Christmas Pageant Ever for 3 years now  during this season. It is such a fun book -lots of humor.  And it teaches a very important lesson about grace and the real meaning of Christmas.

For our road trip, we checked out the audiobook version of The Hobbit.  I went to the movie last night with some friends and I promised the girls that after we listened to the book I would take them.

Christmas Reading Material

Along with The Hobbit – we each checked out a book to take along. Raven was finally able to find the next book in her series at the library – IceFire. Denna chose a Geronimo Stilton.  I was so impressed with the first book in the Beyonders series that I just had to read the second – Seeds of Rebellion.

The girls also each checked out a manga drawing book to bring with their sketchpads.

For my Nook, I have stocked my e-shelves with several of the Harry Dresden books – as recommended to me by several aficionados.

That should be enough material to keep us reading through this holiday break!

What are you reading this Christmas season?  Any good Christmas books that we should add to our list? Link or comment below!

Our family wants to wish you a safe and blessed Christmas this year!
